U.S. enforces naval blockade of Iran following collapse of peace talks

Following the collapse of peace negotiations in Islamabad this past Sunday, the United States has initiated a comprehensive naval blockade of all Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Vice President JD Vance rejected Iranian proposals, ending a temporary ceasefire that was intended to last until April 22. The U.S. military, through CENTCOM, announced the blockade would apply to vessels of all nationalities, effective since April 13. The White House had previously demanded the cessation of uranium enrichment, the return of 400 kilograms of enriched material, and the withdrawal of support for Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. Iran has condemned the move as a violation of its national sovereignty, with Iranian officials warning of retaliation. Concurrently, separate diplomatic efforts are underway to address the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, with talks scheduled in Washington for April 14. Global oil prices have climbed above 100 dollars per barrel due to heightened geopolitical instability. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that Britain will not support a blockade and emphasized the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
