Legendary coach Mircea Lucescu laid to rest in Bucharest

Legendary Romanian football coach Mircea Lucescu passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 80 due to a heart attack, multiple strokes, and pulmonary thromboembolism. Following a period of public mourning at the Arena Nationala in Bucharest, his funeral took place on April 10, 2026. The religious service was held at the Saint Elefterie Church, attended strictly by family and close associates. He was later buried at Bellu Cemetery with full military honors, featuring a gun salute and the national anthem. His son, Razvan Lucescu, who manages PAOK, delivered an emotional eulogy honoring his father's legacy and dedication to football. Several representatives from PAOK FC were present to support the family. Notable figures including Gheorghe Hagi, Simona Halep, and various political and cultural leaders attended the earlier memorial events to pay their respects.
