Cyprus Rugby hosts first women's full contact matches

On 4 April 2026, 16 women participated in the first full contact rugby matches held in Cyprus at the AEL Limassol Rugby home ground. The event occurred during the third round of the men’s Cyprus Rugby 7s Championship. Cyprus Rugby aims to field a national women’s team for international competition by 2027. Seven of the participants are eligible to represent Cyprus and will attend a training camp at the Eton Manor Rugby Club in England on 2 May 2026. They will be joined at the camp by additional players from the Cypriot diaspora. Team Manager Christy Yiannoudes and Development Officer Dave Lee stated the event followed months of training. Participants like Christina Charalambous expressed their intent to compete internationally. The matches were intended to highlight the inclusivity of the sport regarding age, size, and skill level.
