AKEL party calls for investigation into Drousiotis allegations and the surveillance van case
General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, has formally called for an investigation into the recent allegations made by Makarios Drousiotis, emphasizing the need to verify the authenticity of the material presented. Stefanou argued that public trust in state institutions has been severely damaged due to persistent issues of corruption and institutional entanglement. He specifically highlighted the 2019 black surveillance van case, recalling that while the involved company was convicted in Cyprus, the Attorney General’s office suspended proceedings against the owners, allowing them to depart the country. Stefanou noted that the same individuals were later convicted in Greece for similar activities. The AKEL leader asserted that parliamentary inquiries previously confirmed the occurrence of unauthorized surveillance operations. He further claimed that these investigations had unveiled evidence of state involvement or cooperation in such activities. The party maintains that current governmental handling of these sensitive issues has only deepened public skepticism. Consequently, AKEL continues to pressure the administration and the Attorney General for greater transparency.
