Establishment of EU regional firefighting center and arrival of aerial assets in Cyprus

The European Commission is set to inaugurate a regional firefighting hub at the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos, scheduled for April 23-24 during the Informal European Council summit. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will attend the opening ceremony. The center will serve a dual purpose as an operational support hub for the Eastern Mediterranean and a training center of excellence. Funding will be provided through various EU financial mechanisms. Separately, four firefighting helicopters have arrived at Paphos airport to bolster the island’s fire suppression capabilities for the summer season. The fleet includes two Black Hawks equipped with fixed water tanks and two Sikorsky helicopters using buckets. While the government notes that these assets arrived earlier than the previous year's June deployment, there are concerns regarding delays in securing additional aerial support from Jordan due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
