Cost of Cyprus Easter table rises as meat prices remain stable
The Cyprus Consumer Protection Service reported a 4% increase in the cost of a typical Easter meal for eight people, rising to 186.42 euros from 179.36 euros last year. Price monitoring data recorded as of April 6 shows significant surges in vegetables, with tomatoes increasing by 81% to 4.43 euros per kilogram and greenhouse cucumbers by 10%. Other items showing price hikes include feta cheese, eggs, traditional tsoureki bread, flaounes, and soft drinks. Conversely, potatoes and charcoal prices decreased compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Costas Leivadiotis, President of the Cyprus Butchers Association, stated that meat prices remain at last year's levels despite fears of increases due to foot-and-mouth disease. He confirmed an adequate domestic meat supply, noting that 6,000 to 7,000 animals are being slaughtered daily ahead of the holiday. Restrictions regarding the movement of livestock have delayed the collection process but have not prevented availability.
