Death of Dr. George Constantinou, former Director of the Geological Survey Department

The Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus has announced the death of Dr. George Constantinou, who served as Director of the Geological Survey Department from 1980 until his retirement in 1999. Dr. Constantinou began his career at the department in 1964. He earned his doctorate in Mining Geology from Imperial College, University of London, in 1972. His academic research focused on the Troodos ophiolitic rocks, proving they contain the complete stratigraphy of the oceanic crust, a discovery that led to the international term 'Cyprus Type Deposits'. Throughout his career and retirement, he concentrated on the study and utilization of Cyprus's industrial minerals, including copper, bentonite, umber, ochre, clays, and structural stones. He also promoted international academic research partnerships. Additionally, he was recognized for his significant contributions to archaeological research and his close collaboration with the Department of Antiquities.
