IEA head predicts long-term energy transition following Middle East conflict

Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), stated in an interview with Le Figaro that the energy crisis resulting from the Middle East conflict is the most severe in history. Birol projects that this crisis will fundamentally transform the global energy landscape over the coming years. He emphasized that renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, will see accelerated adoption within months. Furthermore, the crisis is expected to provide a boost to nuclear energy, including the use of small modular reactors and the extension of operational life for existing power plants. Birol also anticipates an increased transition toward electric vehicles. While acknowledging that these technological shifts will not solve the immediate crisis, he advocates for prudent energy consumption and conservation in the short term. He concluded that despite the current challenges, the structural changes will ultimately reshape global energy geopolitics.
