Annual report on school violence in Cyprus for the 2024-2025 academic year
The Safe School Team (OAS) released its annual report for the 2024-2025 academic year, highlighting the prevalence of school violence in Cyprus. Research conducted by Dr. Costas Fantis of the University of Cyprus between 2020 and 2024 indicates that most educators consider school violence a significant problem. Approximately 30% of teachers describe the issue as moderate to very serious. Frequent behaviors reported include fighting, bullying, extortion, social isolation, and vandalism. Physical, verbal, and non-verbal aggression remain the most common forms of violence, with higher rates observed in middle schools. There is also a noted increase in cyberbullying incidents. Data from the Counseling and Career Education Service indicates an rise in student referrals related to violence. Furthermore, the Educational Psychology Service identifies family issues, social isolation, and difficulties with school integration as the primary drivers of these behaviors. Many teachers report feeling helpless or unable to manage these incidents effectively.
