Cyprus parliament approves teacher evaluation criteria

On April 6, 2026, the Cypriot Parliament approved new regulations for the evaluation of primary and secondary education teachers. The legislation, passed with 26 votes in favor and 11 against, includes specific evaluation criteria and indicators previously omitted from the framework established in December 2025. The regulations also modify the scoring scale for teacher evaluations, shifting from a 0-10 range to a 1-10 range. Additionally, a DISY amendment was passed with 22 votes in favor and 13 against, mandating that duties arising from these regulations must be discussed within the framework of structured social dialogue. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou welcomed the passage of the criteria as a significant step in the ongoing educational reform. However, several members of parliament expressed concerns regarding the content and implementation timelines, calling for increased transparency. The Ministry of Education is now expected to present a detailed implementation plan for the new evaluation system.
