First round of the world chess candidates tournament concludes in Cyprus
The first round of the FIDE World Chess Candidates Tournament concluded on April 5 at the Cap St Georges Hotel in Cyprus. In the open section, 20-year-old Javokhir Sindarov leads with five wins out of seven matches. His total of five points from seven games is notable, though historical comparisons include Robert Fischer's 6-0 performances and Veselin Topalov's 6.5 points in the 2005 FIDE Championship. In the women’s section, 36-year-old Anna Muzychuk, who joined the tournament one week prior to its start, is currently in the lead. The event uses an eight-player round-robin format implemented by FIDE in 2013. Past candidates such as Ian Nepomniachtchi, Magnus Carlsen, and Fabiano Caruana have posted varying results after the first seven rounds of this format. Further play is scheduled to continue following the current standings.
