Tensions arise over delays in the Akamas Peninsula infrastructure projects
The Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, has expressed concern over the stagnation of road restoration and hydraulic works in the Akamas Peninsula, specifically the first phase covering Aspros Potamos, Lara, Toxeftra, and Avakas. On April 6, 2026, the Akamas Municipality issued a statement criticizing the delays, describing the situation as a paralysis that negatively impacts the local community. The municipality accused environmental organizations of systematic interference and obstruction, while expressing strong support for the Department of Forests and the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. Commissioner Theodosiou rejected the municipality’s stance, labeling their criticism of environmental organizations as unacceptable. She noted that multiple meetings of an ad hoc committee and onsite visits have already taken place with all stakeholders. The commissioner emphasized that the area, which has existed for over 100,000 years, requires prudent decision-making rather than performative actions. Currently, the restoration projects remain pending as stakeholders await further studies regarding the Natura 2000 protected area.
