United for Palestine protest scheduled in Nicosia regarding Israeli legislation
The activist group United for Palestine Nicosia has announced a protest scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, at 6 p.m. outside the Israeli embassy in Nicosia. The demonstration is in response to an Israeli law passed by the Knesset on March 30, which introduces the death penalty for individuals convicted in military courts of offenses classified as terrorism. Organizers claim the law specifically targets Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and citizens of Israel, while effectively excluding Israeli Jewish perpetrators due to specific penal code conditions. The group characterizes the legislation as a form of institutionalized discrimination and a violation of international humanitarian law. Furthermore, the organization alleges that the Israeli justice system frequently relies on confessions obtained under duress and maintains detention practices that violate human rights. Activists are demanding the repeal of the law and calling on President Nikos Christodoulides to publicly oppose the legislation. Additionally, the group urges the Cypriot government to distance itself from its current diplomatic and security relations with Israel.
