Greek Prime Minister proposes legislative changes following OPEKEPE investigation
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has addressed the recent OPEKEPE investigation involving the request for the immunity waiver of 11 New Democracy members of parliament. While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Prime Minister stated that none of the involved MPs are accused of personal financial gain. He urged the European Public Prosecutor's Office to reach a swift decision regarding potential charges. Mitsotakis announced a proposed constitutional reform to establish an incompatibility between ministerial and parliamentary positions, effective after the 2027 elections. Under this proposal, ministers would be replaced in parliament by the next candidate on the electoral list during their tenure. He further reiterated that the next general elections will occur in 2027, dismissing any speculation of an early vote. The Prime Minister emphasized that digital modernization remains his primary tool for reducing state corruption and combating clientelism. He also noted that government members mentioned in the case have already submitted their resignations.
