Status of Shimon Aykut's transfer to Israel
Shimon Aykut, a man convicted by a Cypriot court for offenses related to Greek Cypriot properties, has requested to serve his sentence in Israel. The Israeli government submitted a formal request to the Republic of Cyprus to facilitate his transfer. Nicosia agreed to the request based on an existing bilateral agreement between the two nations. Cypriot authorities secured assurances from Israel that Aykut would be kept in custody rather than released upon his arrival. All required legal documentation for the transfer was prepared by the Cypriot side. However, the Israeli authorities have not completed the final procedural steps. Consequently, Aykut remains incarcerated in Cyprus at this time.
