Animal welfare party reports police inaction regarding dog poisoning in Idali
The Green Party-Citizens' Cooperation has formally criticized the Nicosia Animal Police for inaction regarding a series of dog poisonings in the Idali area that occurred in 2025. On August 17, 2025, a dog named Lilly died after consuming a solid substance suspected to be poison inside its owner's yard. The party claims the poison was placed near toys belonging to a four-year-old child, posing a threat to human safety. The owners report they have received no status updates on the investigation eight months later. A second dog reportedly died around the same time in a similar manner. According to the party, the municipal authorities disposed of the second animal's remains in a local burial site without conducting a necropsy. While officials allegedly claimed the second dog lacked a microchip, the owners contend the animal was properly identified. The party argues that such handling violates animal welfare legislation regarding the investigation of abuse cases.
