Cyprus expands desalination capacity with new Limassol facility
On April 5, a new mobile desalination plant began full operation at the New Port of Limassol, Cyprus, with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters per day. This facility is the third mobile unit commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment to combat water shortages. Previous units were launched in July 2025 in Moni (15,000 cubic meters/day) and Kissonerga (12,000 cubic meters/day). The total number of desalination plants has increased to eight, with a ninth station in Garillis expected to launch in the coming weeks following delays attributed to regional geopolitical tensions. The government aims to increase water supply from desalination from 80% in April 2026 to 100% by early 2027. Future projects for 2026-2027 include additional plants in Episkopi, Vasiliko, Mazotos, and Germasogeia. Water from reservoirs will be redirected for agricultural irrigation as dependency on rainfall decreases.
