Foot-and-mouth disease cases increase to 59 in Cyprus

As of April 7, 2026, the total number of livestock units infected with foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus has reached 59, with 53 cases in the Larnaca district and 6 in Nicosia. Recent testing identified five new positive units in Dromolaxia-Meneou and Geri. The second phase of the vaccination campaign has covered 64% of cattle, 35% of sheep and goats, and 73% of pigs within the affected zones. Veterinary services confirmed that epidemiological sampling in other districts has returned negative results. Authorities have initiated compensation payments for farmers, with over €250,000 distributed as advances for lost income and separate funds allocated for destroyed milk stocks. Officials emphasized that there is no risk to consumers from meat or dairy products and that all necessary sanitary controls remain in place. The vaccination program is expected to conclude by the end of April, while additional financial claims are being processed.
