University of Cyprus study identifies support for federation among Gen Z

Charis Psaltis, a professor at the University of Cyprus and director of the University's Center for Field Research, presented findings regarding public opinion on the Cyprus problem. Research conducted over the last 20 years indicates a majority in both communities favors a Bizonal Bicommunal Federation. Data specifically focused on Generation Z, individuals born between 1997 and 2012, showing they are less apprehensive about reunification than previous generations. This demographic, aged 18 to 30, attributes their stance to increased cross-community contact and a pragmatic view of economic opportunities in a unified state. While political leaders and parties have been criticized for ignoring these trends, Psaltis suggests a new negotiation process is necessary. He argues that leadership should incorporate citizen perspectives to design a mutually acceptable solution. Although some critics question the findings, citing the prevailing political discourse, researchers maintain that the public remains more inclined toward a federal solution than the current political system reflects.
