Debate over fuel price reductions and state subsidies in Cyprus
The Cyprus Consumers Association reported that the government's 8.33 cent per liter fuel subsidy, effective from April 4, was not fully passed on to consumers. The Association monitored prices between April 3 and 4, finding that 19 stations failed to reduce prices by 8 am, while 97 others applied partial reductions. According to their data, the average reduction was 7.6 cents for 95-octane petrol and 7.4 cents for diesel. Conversely, Constantinos Karagiorgis, Director of the Consumer Protection Service, stated that his agency monitors the market daily and found no evidence of profiteering. He argued that the price variations are dynamic and influenced by international market conditions in the Middle East and refinery costs. Savvas Prokopiou, President of the Cyprus Petrol Station Owners Association, acknowledged that some individual stations did not lower their prices, but noted most were not association members. Marios Drousiotis, head of the Consumers Association, criticized the official government stance as an unjustified excuse. The Consumer Protection Service continues to encourage citizens to use price comparison tools to identify more affordable stations.
