Serbian authorities discover explosives near natural gas pipeline

On April 5, 2026, Serbian authorities discovered two bags containing high-yield explosives and detonators near a natural gas pipeline in the Kanjiza region of Vojvodina. The pipeline, known as the Balkan Stream, serves as a vital extension of the TurkStream project, transporting Russian gas through Bulgaria to Serbia and Hungary. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic reported that the discovery was made 15 kilometers from the Hungarian border, noting that the infrastructure is a critical supply route for both countries following the suspension of transit through Ukraine. Following the discovery, President Vucic held a telephone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to share information. Serbian police, military units, and counter-terrorism forces have cordoned off the area to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Military helicopters are also conducting surveillance over the site. President Vucic emphasized the role of intelligence services in preventing a potential incident.
