Maintenance and restoration projects for religious sites in northern Cyprus
Maintenance work has commenced on the church of Ayios Georgios in Mezere, Karavas, with the same contract covering the church of Ayia Irini. Co-chair of the bicommunal Technical Committee, Sotos Ktoris, announced that these projects are funded by the local community and the European Union, with technical guidance provided by the UNDP. Ktoris emphasized that these efforts serve as a bridge for reconciliation between the two communities. Maintenance also continues at the church of Panayia Faneromeni in Gastria, Karpasia. Furthermore, rescue operations were recently completed at the church of Panayia Melissa on the northern slopes of the Pentadaktylos range. These interventions were credited with preventing the structural collapse of the monument. Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot professionals, including architects and engineers, collaborated on these restoration tasks. All cited projects operate under the financial support of the European Union and the technical management of the UNDP.
