New desalination unit becomes operational at Limassol port
A new mobile desalination unit at Limassol port has entered full operation, providing 10,000 cubic metres of water daily. This facility is the third to be commissioned recently, following the launch of units in Moni (15,000 cubic metres/day) and Kissonerga (12,000 cubic metres/day) in July 2025. These additions increase the total number of operational desalination plants in Cyprus from five to eight. An additional unit in Garyllis with a 10,000 cubic metre capacity is scheduled for launch in the coming weeks, following delays attributed to regional geopolitical instability. Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotou stated that the government aims to cover 100% of water needs via desalination by 2027 to decouple supply from rainfall. Future plans for 2026-2027 include the development of further facilities in Episkopi, Vasiliko, Mazotos, and Germasogeia. Existing permanent plants in Paphos, Episkopi, Vasiliko, Larnaca, and Dekeleia are also undergoing capacity assessments.
