New desalination unit at Limassol port becomes operational
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has announced the full operation of the mobile desalination unit at the Limassol port, which contributes 10,000 cubic meters of water daily to the national supply. This facility underwent successful technical and quality testing during a trial period before becoming fully operational. It is the third new unit to launch since July 2025, following the Mony plant (15,000 cubic meters/day) and the Kissonerga plant (12,000 cubic meters/day). The total number of operational desalination units has increased from five in previous years to eight today. An additional 10,000 cubic meter/day unit at Garyllis is expected to launch in the coming weeks, following delays caused by regional geopolitical developments. The government's 2026-2027 plan also includes the completion of mobile units at Episkopi (15,000 cubic meters/day) and Vasiliko. These measures are part of a broader, ongoing strategy to address national water security.
