Nicosia police investigate 10,000 euro phishing scam involving fake GeSY portal

On March 29, 2026, a 47-year-old woman in Cyprus reported a phishing scam resulting in the theft of 10,000 euros. The victim received an English-language SMS appearing to be from the General Healthcare System (GeSY), threatening the deactivation of her profile unless she updated her details immediately. She followed a link to a fraudulent website designed to mimic the official GeSY portal. On the site, she provided her personal information and full banking card credentials under the guise of paying a renewal fee. The fraud was detected the following day after the victim’s bank alerted her to suspicious transaction activity. The Financial Crimes Investigation Department of the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department is currently investigating the case. Police have reminded the public that official organizations do not request sensitive personal or financial information via text messages or external links.
