Cyprus to discuss EU mutual assistance clause at upcoming summit

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced that European leaders will discuss the activation mechanism of Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty during the informal European Council meeting in Nicosia on April 23-24, 2026. The European Commission has been tasked with drafting specific procedural stages to be followed if a member state chooses to invoke this mutual assistance clause. Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus is not currently part of the regional crisis, maintaining that the country is a safe destination, while his government focuses on de-escalation efforts. During a recent visit to Thessaloniki, where he was named an honorary citizen, the President reiterated the importance of EU solidarity and the goal of achieving European strategic autonomy. He also addressed national commemorations for Greek and Pontic Greek history, marking May 19th as a day of remembrance for victims of the Pontic Greek genocide. These discussions on security mechanisms align with the goals of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. No formal activation of Article 42.7 has occurred recently, with the only previous precedent being France following the 2015-2016 terrorist attacks.
