Cypriot president announces defense infrastructure upgrades and regional fire center
On April 4, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides visited the Alefka outpost in Pyrgos Tyllirias and the Andreas Papandreou airbase in Paphos. During his visits, the president emphasized that strengthening the deterrent capacity of the Republic of Cyprus is a top government priority due to the country's strategic location. Planned upgrades to the airbase in Paphos are estimated to cost between €10 million and €14 million, while Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas previously noted that upgrades at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari could exceed €200 million. Christodoulides mentioned that the government has facilitated training for National Guard personnel at United States military academies and is moving to purchase hardware directly from the U.S. Additionally, the president inspected progress on the European Union Regional Firefighting Center at the Paphos airbase. This center is scheduled for inauguration by Christodoulides and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during an informal European Council meeting in Cyprus on April 23-24, 2026. The facility aims to serve as a hub for responding to forest fires in the Eastern Mediterranean.
