Volt Cyprus calls for measures against atmospheric dust impact
The political party Volt Cyprus has issued a statement regarding the ongoing episode of high atmospheric dust concentrations that has affected the island since two days ago. The dust has led to reduced visibility and poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular issues. While acknowledging that Cyprus cannot single-handedly prevent cross-border dust phenomena, the party insists that the government must minimize public exposure and implement stronger public health measures. Furthermore, the party urges the state to address local sources of dust and particle resuspension. Proposed solutions include increasing green spaces, planting trees along roads, and covering soil with vegetation to reduce airborne particles. The party also emphasizes the necessity of regional cooperation to enhance weather forecasting, scientific monitoring, and early warning systems. Additionally, they advocate for restoration efforts in regions identified as primary sources of dust.
