Police operations against illegal Easter bonfire material and firecrackers
Cypriot police have intensified patrols across all districts to prevent youth delinquency, the illegal use of firecrackers, and the unauthorized collection of wood for traditional Easter bonfires. Operations resulted in the arrest of six individuals and the seizure of 143 firecrackers, offensive weapons, and tools. In Paphos, three suspects aged 15 to 18 were apprehended with 131 firecrackers and a knuckleduster. In Nicosia, two minors aged 15 and 17 were arrested for theft of construction materials intended for bonfires, along with 12 firecrackers. A 29-year-old man was arrested in Larnaca for possession of drugs, a knife, and burglary tools after being stopped near a fire incident in Oroklini. Additionally, authorities in Limassol, Nicosia, and Larnaca have confiscated significant quantities of wood stored for bonfires and responded to various small fire incidents, including burning trash bins. The police confirmed that these operations are part of a broader, ongoing campaign to maintain public safety during the holiday period.
