Police intensify operations against Easter firecracker use and unauthorized bonfires across Cyprus
Cyprus police have launched nationwide intensified patrols to prevent the illegal use of firecrackers and the unauthorized lighting of traditional Easter bonfires, known as lambradjia. During overnight operations on April 9 and 10, 2026, authorities seized large quantities of timber and tires intended for bonfires and responded to multiple fire-related incidents with assistance from the Fire Service. In Nicosia, a 21-year-old man was arrested around 9:20 p.m. after officers discovered 1.8 grams of a substance suspected to be cocaine and 23 firecrackers in his possession. The suspect also faces traffic investigations as his motorcycle was officially registered as immobilised, lacked a valid roadworthiness certificate, and he did not hold a driving licence. In a separate incident in Paphos at approximately 10:00 p.m., police confiscated a bag containing 15 firecrackers and a knife found in an open area. Officials in Paphos announced that bonfires will only be permitted near churches if organizers submit requests and meet strict safety preconditions. Police confirmed they are continuing targeted operations across all districts to ensure public safety and have contacted parents to retrieve minors found gathering at bonfire sites.
