Police conduct nationwide operations to prevent Easter bonfire-related incidents

During the last 24 hours, the Cyprus Police conducted intensified patrols across all districts to prevent illegal fire-lighting, specifically focusing on the traditional 'lampratzia' (Easter bonfires) and juvenile delinquency. In Limassol, officers responded to three fire incidents, including two small blazes and one involving garbage bins, all extinguished by the Fire Service. Additionally, authorities confiscated large quantities of timber intended for bonfires in Limassol, Nicosia, and Larnaca, which were handed over to local authorities. In Limassol, police checked 70 young individuals, including several minors who were subsequently returned to their parents, though no illegal conduct was recorded. A total of 15 trucks worth of wood, including furniture, were collected by authorities during recent efforts. Police are collaborating with schools and local school boards to identify high-risk locations for bonfire activities. Officials, including Police pyrotechnician Paris Kyriacou and Nicosia School Board President Nikos Megalemos, emphasized the importance of prevention, monitoring, and school security to ensure public safety before Easter Sunday.
