Police conduct operation to prevent traditional Easter bonfire-related incidents
Cypriot police have intensified patrols across all provinces to curb the illegal use of firecrackers and the unauthorized gathering of wood for 'lampratzia' Easter bonfires. During recent operations, officers responded to three fire incidents in the Limassol district, including one involving waste bins, which were extinguished by the fire department. Authorities also seized wood stockpiles intended for bonfires in Limassol and Nicosia, transferring them to local municipal cleanup crews. In Limassol, police stopped groups of youths for routine checks; 38 individuals were cleared, while 32 others, including minors, were questioned at youth gathering spots. Minors found during these patrols were released to the custody of their parents. Official Costas Fytiris reported that 15 truckloads of materials, including furniture, were collected in a single day. Police, in collaboration with school boards, continue to monitor high-risk locations for prohibited bonfire activities ahead of Easter Sunday.
