Police conduct nationwide operations against Easter bonfire materials and firecrackers
On April 4 and 5, 2026, police in Cyprus intensified patrols to prevent youth delinquency, the use of firecrackers, and the unauthorized preparation of Easter bonfires. Authorities arrested six individuals across the districts of Nicosia, Paphos, and Larnaca, four of whom were minors. In Paphos, officers arrested two 15-year-olds and an 18-year-old on Saturday night after finding 131 firecrackers and a knuckleduster in their possession. In Nicosia, two minors aged 15 and 17 were arrested for theft of wooden pallets and chairs intended for a bonfire, with 12 firecrackers also seized. In Oroklini, Larnaca, a 29-year-old man was arrested during a fire-related investigation for possession of drugs, a knife, and burglary tools. Across these operations, police confiscated a total of 143 firecrackers and various materials meant for bonfires. Fire services were called to multiple locations to extinguish unauthorized fires throughout the night.
