Tufan Erhurman discusses crossing points and legislative tensions in the north
Tufan Erhurman, a Turkish Cypriot leader, recently reported improvements at the Agios Dometios crossing point and the commencement of procedures for the Zodhia crossing. He added that pending issues regarding the Deryneia crossing are expected to be resolved. Beyond infrastructure, Erhurman addressed recent political instability, specifically criticizing the government's decision to bypass the local assembly through a legislative decree regarding the cost-of-living allowance (ATA). He stated that he was not informed of this decree during his prior consultations with 'Prime Minister' Unal Ustel. Erhurman expressed concern that this move undermines trust and sets a dangerous precedent for bypassing parliamentary processes. He also recalled recent violent clashes during trade union protests, noting that several individuals were injured during these demonstrations. Erhurman emphasized that he attempted to mediate between the government and trade unions to foster dialogue before the decree was unilaterally issued.
