Cyprus negotiates purchase of French and American armoured vehicles
The Republic of Cyprus is in advanced talks with French defense firms KNDS and Arquus to acquire over 150 armoured vehicles, specifically the Griffon and Serval models. Reports from Alithia and Philenews suggest the order could include 80 VBMR Griffon and 100 VBMR-L Serval units, potentially equipped with Akeron MP anti-tank missiles. This procurement is linked to the EU’s SAFE programme for joint defense. Simultaneously, the National Guard is evaluating a modernization program for its existing fleet, considering upgrades for approximately 80 of its 150 current VAB vehicles. Furthermore, the Ministry of Defence is exploring the acquisition of wheeled armoured personnel carriers from US surplus stockpiles following bilateral visits. The strategic shift toward wheeled vehicles is based on operational requirements for speed, maneuverability, and lower maintenance costs compared to tracked platforms. This focus on agility and rapid reaction reflects lessons learned from recent conflicts and aligns with similar modernization efforts in the Greek army.
