The first mobile phone call in 1973

In 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper placed the first mobile phone call in Manhattan, New York. Using a prototype device known as the Motorola DynaTAC, he contacted Joel Engel at Bell Labs. Reports on the prototype's weight vary between 0.9 kilograms and 1.1 kilograms. This event demonstrated the viability of portable wireless communication, distinct from landlines. Bell Labs later developed a test cellular network in 1978, while the first automated networks appeared in Scandinavia in the early 1980s. The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X became the first commercially approved mobile phone. Early devices were primarily installed in vehicles due to their size and limited battery life.
