Tensions rise over Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz

Since the start of the conflict on February 28, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy transit route, as retaliation against US and Israeli military strikes. Tehran has declared the channel closed to 'hostile' nations while implementing a toll system for transit, with reports indicating that some vessels have already paid fees in Chinese yuan. US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum for the strait to be reopened by Tuesday at 8:00 p.m., threatening severe consequences. Iran, through officials like Mehdi Tabatabaei, has linked the reopening to a new legal framework and compensation for war damages. Meanwhile, Iran has established a de facto safe passage corridor near Larak Island for select vessels, including those from Oman, Japan, and France. Oman is currently engaged in diplomatic talks with Iran to ensure the passage of essential goods. Furthermore, Iranian officials have hinted that other strategic maritime chokepoints, such as the Bab el-Mandeb, could also be targeted if hostilities escalate.
