University of Cyprus discussion addresses the legal status of British bases
On Tuesday evening, the University of Cyprus hosted a discussion regarding the legal status and future of British sovereign base areas on the island. The speakers included former Attorney General Costas Clerides, Associate Professor of International Law Aristotelis Constantinides, and Professor of International Relations Costas M. Constantinou. The panelists emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus needs to formally clarify its requirements regarding these bases. Former Attorney General Clerides drew a parallel with the Chagos Archipelago dispute between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. He detailed how Mauritius successfully challenged the legality of the 1965 Lancaster House agreement, which separated the islands to facilitate a U.S. military base on Diego Garcia. This challenge eventually reached the UN General Assembly and the International Court of Justice, which ruled that the UK had an obligation to terminate its administration of the archipelago. The speakers analyzed these historical legal developments to provide perspectives on the situation in Cyprus.
