Cyprus House of Representatives passes law for the Pan-Cyprian Federation of Student Unions

The Plenary of the House of Representatives in Cyprus has approved a legislative proposal establishing the framework for the structure and operation of the Pan-Cyprian Federation of Student Unions (POFEN). The bill was submitted by a cross-party group of members of parliament, including representatives from DISY, AKEL, the Democratic Alignment, and independent MP Alexandra Attalidou. Previously, POFEN operated without a formal legislative framework since its inception, with the need for regulation becoming apparent following a 2019 legal amendment. Lawmakers described the legislation as a collective effort intended to grant POFEN institutional status as a legal entity. Supporters of the bill highlighted that this measure provides the student body with an institutional voice and ensures their autonomy. While the decision was welcomed by House President Annita Demetriou, concerns were raised by some members regarding the necessity for the student movement to remain truly independent. The move effectively resolves long-standing issues concerning the federation's legal standing and operational procedures.
