Lawyer assaulted by defendant at Limassol Criminal Court

On Friday, a defendant at the Limassol Criminal Court physically assaulted a female representative of the Prosecution shortly after receiving a four-year prison sentence for a kidnapping case. The incident occurred as the defendant was being escorted from the courtroom by members of the Special Police Force (MMAD) after the judges had departed. Despite the security presence, the man managed to strike the lawyer in the face before being restrained. The victim was transported by ambulance to a private hospital for medical treatment. Attorney General George Savvides condemned the act as an attack on justice itself and ordered an immediate investigation into the event. He also announced a meeting with the Chief of Police and the Minister of Justice to re-evaluate security protocols for court proceedings. This marks the third assault on a public official in the region in the recent past.
