High concentrations of African dust recorded across Cyprus
The Cyprus Meteorological Service issued a red weather alert due to a significant influx of dust from North Africa. The alert was active from 3:00 on Friday, April 3, until 3:00 on Saturday, April 4. Extremely high concentrations of particulate matter were recorded, with Nicosia reaching 1167.7 µg/m³ and Ayia Marina peaking at 2047 µg/m³. Elevated levels were reported across several regions, including Paphos, Larnaca, Paralimni, and Troodos, while Limassol remained at an orange alert level. Authorities warned that the dust is hazardous to health, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. Employers were advised to adjust working conditions for outdoor personnel, and the public was urged to remain indoors and avoid strenuous physical activity. Weather forecasts indicate unstable conditions with rain and thunderstorms expected through the weekend, which may help clear the air by Sunday, April 5.
