Scientists unveil handbag created from lab-grown T. rex collagen

Scientists and designers in Amsterdam have unveiled a teal handbag manufactured from lab-grown collagen derived from Tyrannosaurus rex fossils found in the United States. The project involved a collaboration between The Organoid Company, VML, and Lab-Grown Leather Ltd. To create the material, ancient protein fragments from the fossils were integrated into animal cells via genetic engineering to produce collagen. Thomas Mitchell of The Organoid Company acknowledged significant technical difficulties during the development process. The handbag is currently displayed on a rock beneath a T. rex skeleton replica at the Art Zoo museum in Amsterdam. It will remain on exhibit until May 11, after which it is scheduled for auction. Reports indicate an expected starting price exceeding $500,000. This project aims to demonstrate the potential of lab-grown leather as a sustainable alternative to traditional materials.
