U.S. Secretary of Defense requests resignation of Army Chief of Staff
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has requested the immediate resignation and retirement of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, according to CBS News. General George, a West Point graduate who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was confirmed by the Senate in 2023 with a term intended to last until 2027. Secretary Hegseth reportedly seeks to install a replacement who aligns with the policy vision of President Donald Trump. General Christopher LaNeve, the current Vice Chief of Staff and former military aide to Hegseth, is considered a leading candidate for the position. This move follows a broader trend in which Hegseth has dismissed over ten senior officers, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti. The dismissal occurred shortly after Hegseth suspended disciplinary actions against a helicopter crew involved in a flight over Kid Rock's residence in Nashville. These personnel changes represent a significant restructuring of the Department of Defense leadership under the current administration.
