Cyprus parliament updates dentistry regulations and formalizes new specializations
On Thursday, the plenary of the Cyprus House of Representatives voted to modernize the dentistry profession by formalizing several new dental specializations. The newly recognized fields include endodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontology, and prosthodontics. These regulations aim to enhance the quality of patient care and prevent insufficiently trained practitioners from performing specialized procedures. The updated framework expands the academic and training requirements for dentists seeking specialist recognition. It also establishes procedures for recognizing postgraduate qualifications and practical training obtained within the Republic of Cyprus. To qualify, a dentist must hold a postgraduate degree or specialized certificate obtained through examinations, valid in the country of issuance. Additionally, the legislation includes transitional provisions for dentists already registered in the Dental Registry. Professionals can be recognized as specialists in their fields if they demonstrate that they acquired the relevant expertise prior to March 27, 2009, which corresponds to the effective date of the relevant European Directive.
