Hulusi Akar comments on security and sovereignty of Cyprus
Hulusi Akar, Chairman of the Turkish Parliamentary Committee on National Defense, stated that recent military reinforcements in the Republic of Cyprus create security risks and regional instability. During a meeting in Ankara with Ismet Korukluoglu, the representative of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Akar expressed opposition to these military developments. He characterized the actions of the Greek Cypriot side as risky. Akar reaffirmed the position that the island of Cyprus is not Greek but rather a homeland for Turkish Cypriots. He further argued that the recognition of two separate, sovereign, and equal states is an inevitable solution to the Cyprus issue. Ankara maintains that it remains united and determined in its policy regarding the island's future. The Republic of Cyprus considers these actions a matter of national sovereignty and defense.
