Analysis of the electricity market in Cyprus
Andreas Procopiou, a former senior researcher in smart grids at the University of Melbourne and current executive at a private solar energy firm, is publishing articles to explain the functioning of the Cypriot electricity market. These efforts, conducted in partnership with the Archbishopric, aim to address public misunderstandings regarding market competition. However, critics argue that Cyprus's electricity isolation and lack of cheaper conventional fuels hinder cost reductions for consumers. Data indicates that between 300,000 and 350,000 households without rooftop solar panels, along with many small businesses, do not experience the benefits of a competitive market. Some analysts suggest that the current market structure may even increase production and operational costs for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), which are then passed on to consumers. Procopiou maintains that public discourse should be based on factual data rather than speculation. The ongoing debate highlights the gap between theoretical market models and the practical reality for Cypriot energy consumers.
