Unficyp investigates incident involving projectile throwing in Nicosia buffer zone
On Wednesday, a group of individuals threw rocks and fireworks toward the north side of the UN buffer zone on Markou Drakou Street in Nicosia. The incident reportedly targeted Turkish Cypriot civilians present in a park and nearby cafes located near the Roccas bastion. UNFICYP issued a statement condemning the violence and initiated contact with authorities on both sides to conduct an investigation. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman alleged that the group operated from government-controlled areas and criticized the lack of security measures on the anniversary of the founding of EOKA. Turkish officials, including Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, characterized the event as a terrorist act and blamed the Greek Cypriot administration. No injuries were reported during the encounter. UNFICYP has called for restraint and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and prevent future occurrences.
