Cyprus defense ministry updates on equipment procurement and soldier benefits
Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas confirmed the Republic of Cyprus's interest in acquiring the Kentavros anti-drone system, with plans to potentially purchase four units through the EU's SAFE program or direct procurement. Regarding contract soldiers (SYOP), the cabinet approved an increase in special monthly allowances: from €100 to €150 for all personnel, and from €200 to €250 for those in special units, including commandos, nurses, and new categories like military police motorcyclists. A new call for recruitment is scheduled for May to fill vacant positions. Furthermore, the government will finalize the permanent employment of the first 250 contract soldiers who have reached their tenth year of service. Addressing foreign reports, Minister Palmas neither confirmed nor denied rumors regarding a deal to procure approximately 100 anti-tank weapons from France. He noted that cooperation with France is ongoing through EU frameworks, advising patience for official updates.
