Cyprus innovation sector experiences growth and international recognition

Cyprus has recorded significant expansion in its startup ecosystem, growing fivefold since 2020. The nation has entered the top 40 global startup rankings and is currently categorized as an innovation leader by the Global Innovation Index. Key sectors driving this growth include fintech, gaming, deep tech, media, edtech, SaaS, and biotechnology. The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), led by Director General Theodoros Loukaidis, serves as the primary government entity facilitating this development. RIF provides structured funding programs—covering pre-seed, seed, and scale-up stages—to transition research into commercialized products. The ecosystem is supported by a network of universities, research centers, incubators, and private venture investors. While international visibility and foreign investment have increased, the country currently faces the challenge of maintaining this momentum for long-term economic impact. Current efforts are focused on bridging the gap between academic research and commercial market application to ensure future sustainability.
