Joint operations in Sovereign Base Areas lead to ten arrests

Police in the Sovereign Base Areas (SBA), in coordination with the Cyprus Police, the United Nations, and HM Customs and Immigration, have conducted seven joint operations since mid-February. While the primary objective was to intercept illegal Easter firecrackers, no firecrackers were seized during these checks. Instead, authorities made ten arrests for unrelated crimes, including drug offences, traffic violations, and the smuggling of tobacco products. Furthermore, the Cyprus Police initiated three additional legal cases. Temporary Superintendent Marcos Petrou noted that the collaboration has successfully reduced the smuggling of fireworks from the northern part of the island. Officials have also engaged in educational outreach at local schools to warn against the dangers of fireworks. Additional security operations are scheduled to take place before the Greek Orthodox Easter, which occurs in less than two weeks. Temporary Chief Inspector Tony Demetriou stated that these measures are intended to address broader concerns regarding youth criminality and anti-social behaviour.
